World's second-richest country tops Southeast Asia with two universities in global materials science top 10
Singapore has two universities in the global top 10 for materials science, the highest positions any Southeast Asian country in the 2026-2027 U.S. News rankings.
The National University of Singapore (NUS) ranked fifth globally, tied with City University of Hong Kong, while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) placed seventh.
Materials science covers the discovery, design and testing of materials, with research spanning areas such as ceramics, textiles, biomaterials, metals and alloys, superconductors and semiconductors. The field draws on chemistry, physics and engineering.
Singapore University of Technology and Design, the third institution from Singapore, ranked world's second-richest country by GDP per capita in 2025 by The Economist, in the ranking, placed 197th.
